NIH “Research
Supplements for Underrepresented Minorities” or “Research
Supplements for Individuals with Disabilities” are NIH funding designed
to increase the number of underrepresented minority students and students
with disabilities participating in research. A “Supplement” is a
grant you would write in collaboration with a faculty member, that would
fund you to participate with an NIH funded project. The project must
have funding remaining for a reasonable period of time (usually two years
or more). If you are a candidate for this type of grant, please consider
applying and discuss it with the Center Administrator, project coordinator,
or project PI.
The Center is dedicated to training
social workers at all levels to conduct rigorous research. Flexible employment
as a research assistant for the Center is often possible, and opportunities
are available for work-study and international students. All students
are encouraged to attend the Center-sponsored mental health research seminars.
The Center offers students opportunities to build their skills in working
with particular populations, i.e., African Americans, at-risk youth, elderly,
homeless. Field practica in mental health research are available
for master's level students. It is possible for practicum students
to receive specialized instruction in the field of mental health services
research. Finally, independent study opportunities can be arranged.
Similar positions are offered for Ph.D. Students.
