Conference on Asset-building and
Social Development: Theory, Research, and Policy
A
two-day program of lectures, panel discussions, and site visits, where
scholars from around
the world will study strategies for investing in individuals, families and
communities. Conference Theme:Asset building refers to creation of financial and
tangible assets as a strategy for social and economic development.
Asset building is playing a larger role in social policy in many nations, for
example in defined contribution schemes in social security, and individual
development accounts as an anti-poverty strategy in the United States and
elsewhere. This conference will consider asset building and social
development in China. The goal of this conference is to study asset-based policy and its potential impacts and applications in China. International scholars will introduce the theory and practice of asset-based policy. Experts from China will focus on Chinese social policies for poverty reduction and development. Discussion sessions will explore how lessons from Chinese social development can inform future international policy developments, and how international experiences might be adapted to the unique circumstances of China.
